Health through the Holidays, yes we can!

It is obvious everyone freaks out around the holidays about what to eat, how much to eat and the magical thought that seeing a cookie will add 5 lbs to your hips. STOP!!!!!

It will all be fine if you plan well and prepare foods ahead of time you can eat without guilt!

When I think of the holidays I think of great smells and flavors that define my childhood memories. Clove, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and chocolate. We want sweet and warm foods!

I would say, it is the smells and flavors that satisfy ,versus a big plate of sugar cookies or divinity . After all ,we all can remember what those things taste like right?  A friend of mine asked me how can you not eat that cookie? I responded that “I had eaten that cookie hundreds of times , I remember what it tastes likes”. What I meant by that was I will not have any further pleasure from eating it again. The taste will be gone from my mouth minutes after I eat it and I will still have the fat and sugar to deal with!

So my advice is the following:

  1. Get some sugar free hot cocoa and mix up a big cup. Add cinnamon,clove and nutmeg to it. You will satisfy your sweet tooth and not harm your health. Have it frequently during the holiday to you are not tempted to eat sugary things.
  2. Get candles that smell like the holidays! They will satisfy your olfactory needs.
  3. Buy some Ginger tea. It’s great for your tummy and with some Splenda in it is quite sweet and yummy
  4. Get a milk frother. Pour in your nonfat milk and froth it up! Actually, nonfat milk froths much better than milk with fat in it. add some cinnamon  or some sugar-free Hazelnut syrup
  5. Lastly get some sugar free/fat free Jello pudding mix. Use nonfat milk. Make a bunch of individual cups and keep them in your fridge. Slice some bananas on top or strawberries and presto , tasty treats

So I wanted to post a couple of quick meals I had today. First breakfast!

This yummy dish is a staple of mine. I eat it at least 4-5 times a week. Sometimes for breakfast and sometimes for lunch. The ingredients are so simple and it meets all of my dietary rules:

1 cup of Chiobani nonfat plain Greek Yogurt

I Splenda

2 teaspoons of cinnamon

Berries and apples chopped on top

1/4 cup of high fiber low fat Go Lean Kashi cereal.

You can use any fruit you like! It is filling and packed with good stuff

For Lunch today I reheated some veggie /bison soup with a bone broth stock and plenty of turmeric .

Again all my ingredients are simple and go together quickly. I don’t have a lot of time to indulge in complicated preparations.

So I used frozen organic veggies

1 lb carrots

1 lb corn

1 lb green beans

1 lb frozen onion

2 lbs ground bison ( low fat)

1 tablespoon Turmeric

salt and pepper to taste

4 cups Bone broth ( you can you beef stock as well)

In the crockpot for a few hours on high and it is ready.

I kept this in a container in the fridge for the last 5 days and it just keeps getting better.

  • You can put literally any vegetable you can think of in here. Enjoy it with a plain whole wheat roll or French bread!

There is one more little weapon in my arsenal I love. It’s called Kevita cleansing probiotic.IMG_3543.JPG

I drink one a day. Remember ,our gut is a complicated organ that requires balance. I feel that between the fiber this diet calls for and the probiotics in this drink along with the yogurt I eat, all is well with the world! Plus it has my favorite herbs and spices in it!

    • It is sold in most major grocery stores. I’ve found it at Safeway and Fred Meyers. Certainly it is at most natural grocery stores
      It is located in the cooler areas as it is a perishable item

    • No I actually bought it . It is so much easier and I can but several ahead of time so I can always whip up some yummy soup. I like to use it as it has so much protein!

      • I’ve got an instant pot pressure cooker. I’ve heard they make bone broth and I’ve always been a little curious. Maybe we should try one day.
